Don’t Be Irritated by Dry Eyes!
by Optoplus / August 2019
What is Dry Eye?
Dry eye refers to an eye condition caused by insufficient or poor-quality tears that are unable to keep the surface of the eye adequately lubricated.
The eye’s surface, also known as the tear film, is made up of three distinct layers: the lipid layer, the aqueous layer and the mucin layer. The lipid layer produces a lubricating film on the eye to help ensure the eyelid slides properly and prevents tear evaporation. The aqueous layer is made up of water, electrolytes and protein. It protects the eye by ridding it of dust, microbes and foreign objects. Finally, the mucin layer, produced by the mucus cells of the conjunctiva, stabilizes the aqueous layer. Tear quality can be compromised by the weakness of one of these three layers.
Age can have an effect on the amount of tears secreted. With age, the lacrimal glands produce fewer tears. In women, this often occurs following menopause.
What are the symptoms?
Dry eye symptoms can include, but is not limited to, burning, tingling, irritation, redness, discharge and/or blurred vision. These symptoms can be very mild and infrequent, or very severe and chronic. This can result in discomfort that can lead to corneal irritation or eye infections. It is important to treat the problem after the onset of the first symptoms.
