How do you relieve dry eyes?
by Optoplus / June 2020
The sun is finally here! But with changes in the weather come seasonal allergies and air conditioning, two of many factors that can increase the risk of dry eye. Although this eye condition may seem trivial, it is estimated that 25% of Canadians suffer from dry eye and that an additional 5% are affected but unaware. Dry eye syndrome can cause much more than just daily discomfort, such as itching, tearing, blurred vision, irritation, sensitivity to light and eye fatigue. Do you experience any of these symptoms? It's about time to do something about it! Fortunately, OPTOPLUS has the solution for you.
What is dry eye?
Dry eye is a condition that is mainly caused by a decrease in the quantity or quality of tears, leaving eyes dry and irritated.
The tear glands clean, lubricate and protect the eye from infection. As you may have guessed, their proper functioning is essential. When tear glands do not produce sufficient tears, they cause dry eyes and increase the risk of eye infections and inflammation.
What are the causes?
Like hair and skin, eyes become drier with age and produce fewer tears. Therefore, dry eyes are often a sign of aging and are more commonly seen in women after menopause.
However, dry eyes can affect anyone at any age. In addition to the weather conditions mentioned above, several other factors can cause dry eyes, such as contact lenses, medication, hormonal changes, laser eye surgery and prolonged exposure to screens. In more serious cases, it may also be related to health problems or eye disorders.
How can I relieve the symptoms?
It is always advisable to first consult an eye care professional, so that the cause of the symptoms can be determined, especially if they become severe. Although there is no cure, a variety of products are available to relieve the symptoms and discomfort associated with dry eyes.
