Which Glasses Fit Your Face Shape?

There has never been a wider selection of available eyewear, yet it can be difficult to find frames that suit your unique face shape. However, there are a few tricks that opticians and optometrists know to help select the right frames. Facial traits are often grouped into six distinct geometric shapes: round, oval, square, rectangular, triangular and heart-shaped. 

Glasses have the power to affect facial proportions and create a more harmonious look at first glance, however, there are no set of rules that should limit expressing your own style! Here are a few tips from the pros to help you make sense of it all.

Round face 

Round faces have prominent cheekbones and soft angles; the forehead and jaw are of equal proportions.

Bold frames with clean shapes are preferred; rectangular cat-eye frames as well as geometric shapes. These clean bold lines will help give structure to round faces.

Oval face

The oval face has prominent cheekbones, with corners tapering gently to the forehead and chin.

This is one of the most common face shapes and can be combined with a wide variety of styles. Glasses that are as wide as or wider than the cheekbones will help balance the width.

Square face

If you have a wide forehead which is in line with your cheekbones and jawline, then you have a square face shape.

Round or oval frames are best to soften the right angles of this type of face; thin frames and light colours will also help give a less severe look. 

Rectangular face 

A rectangular face is characterized by being longer than it is wide; the jaw is angular, and the nose is usually long.

These faces will benefit from either thin cat-eye, double-toned or decorative temple frames which will help create the illusion of width. A lower bridge will also help shorten the nose line.

Triangular face 

A triangular face can be recognized by its jawline which is wider than the forehead, and who’s upwardly tapering lines are reminiscent of an isosceles triangle.

For this type of face, opt for contrasting glasses with a thicker or decorated upper part. Frames that mix curves and more angular shapes will also create a balancing effect, as long as the frames are kept above the cheekbones.

Heart-Shaped face 

Heart-shaped faces are characterized by a broad forehead, prominent cheekbones and a pointed chin.

Clear, thin or rimless frames will look great on this face shape. To redistribute the proportions of the forehead, frames with a thicker lower rim are preferable, as well as frame with winged edges such as oval cat-eye shapes.
