Mediflex®: Daily disposable Contact Lenses That Help Clean the Oceans
by Optoplus / March 2023
Improve Your Vision and the State of Our Planet
It was once challenging to find an environmentally friendly alternative to single use contact lenses; the sheer amount of packaging and plastic was a deterrent for people looking to make the transition to contact lenses. With Mediflex® Supreme and Mediflex® Elite 1-Day contact lenses you can correct your vision while having a positive impact on the environment. Every little bit helps when it comes to the environment, and choosing the right eyecare products can make a real difference in the world.
Going Green is More Popular Than Ever
The need to act in terms of the environment is clearer than ever. CooperVision, a Canadian global leader in contact lenses, conducted a survey: 88%1 of Canadian contact lens wearers believe that manufacturers need to embrace sustainable manufacturing techniques. More and more patients are committed to making environmentally friendly choices in their daily lives, and as many as 95% of Canadian contact lens wearers agree that keeping plastic out of the oceans is important to them. Eyewear initiatives that have a positive impact on the environment are not only necessary, but they are also supported by most patients who want to make a difference in the world through greener daily habits.
Environmentally Friendly Contact Lenses
Mediflex® Supreme and Mediflex® Elite 1-Day disposable contact lenses are manufactured in an environmentally responsible manner in LEED-certified factories, focusing on water and energy conservation, as well as reducing, reusing and recycling resources. This environmental initiative also include empowering the people within the company and the communities in which it operates. The results are in: on average, 95% of the materials in the production process of Mediflex® Supreme and Mediflex® Elite 1-Day contact lenses – including 99% of the plastic generated – are reused.2
Through its 2021 partnership with Plastic Bank®, CooperVision and Mediflex® have become the fist net plastic neutral contact lens supplier in Canada3: this effort has prevented the equivalent of more than 100 million plastic bottles from entering the oceans.
Which Contact Lenses Should I Buy?
For every Mediflex® Supreme and Mediflex® Elite 1-Day contact lens you purchase, an equivalent amount of plastic is collected from the oceans by costal workers in developing countries.4 These communities can then exchange the collected plastic for Plastic Bank® for goods and services that improve their lives. By choosing these contact lenses, you are helping to create a direct positive impact on the environment.
Green From Product to Packaging
In addition, recycling contact lens packaging is easier than ever. Cardboard boxes are made from standard cardboard, which is considered recyclable paper, while the plastic blister packs are considered number 5 plastic, as is the case with yogurt cups for example. Cardboard boxes and plastic blister packs can therefore be placed in the recycling bin for residential collection. A simple and practical way to reduce your environmental footprint!
Towards a Better Future
It’s easier than ever to think green in eyewear. If you wear contact lenses or want to try them out, remember Mediflex® Supreme and Mediflex® Elite 1-Day for your next environmentally friendly visual health purchase.

4. Net plastic neutrality is achieved by purchasing credits from the Plastic Bank. One credit represents the collection and conversion of one kilogram of plastic that may reach or be destined for waterways around the world. CooperVision purchases credits for the weight of the plastic in orders of Mediflex® Elite and Mediflex® Supreme within a given time frame. The weight of plastic (Mediflex® Elite 1-Day and Mediflex® Supreme 1-Day) is determined by the weight of plastic in the blister packs, lens and secondary packaging, including laminates, adhesives and auxiliary inputs (e.g. ink).
