Why Must We Protect Our Eyes from The Sun?
by Optoplus / June 2024
When it comes to protecting yourself from the sun, it’s easy to only think of protecting your skin. But did you know that your eyes are also vulnerable to sun damage? Excessive exposure to UV rays and blue light can have harmful consequences for eye health, from eyelid cancer to macular degeneration, which is why it’s so important to understand these risks and how to properly protect your eyes to preserve your sight for years to come.
The Dangers to Your Eyelids
The eyelids and skin around the eyes play a crucial role in protecting our eyes. However, spending too much time in the sun without adequate protection can increase the risk of eyelid cancer, particularly basal cell carcinoma. Around 85% of eyelid tumours are of this type, making basal cell cancer the most common cancer in this area of the skin.
The Risks to the Front Surface of the Eye
The cornea, sclera and conjunctiva are key structures on the front surface of the eye. Prolonged exposure to the sun can lead to various problems, including photokeratitis – sunburn of the cornea – or the formation of pinguecula or pterygium, as well as conjunctival tumours. These conditions can affect your vision and eye comfort.
*Age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
Protecting the lens
Like the lens of a camera, the lens of the eye is vital for clear vision, but it is also susceptible to damage from the sun. Excessive exposure to UV rays has been linked to certain types of cataracts, which can impair vision and require surgery to correct.
Preventing Damage to the Retina
The retina is the light-sensitive inner wall at the back of the eye: it transforms light into electrical impulses which are then transmitted to the brain, forming our vision. But this sensitive wall can also be affected by UV rays and blue light. Studies have shown that these types of light can damage the sensitive cells of the retina, increasing the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for AMD, which underlines the importance of preventive action.
So, How Can You Protect Your Eyes Properly?
The best way to protect your eyes from the sun is to wear quality sunglasses that are UV400 rated, meaning they block 100% of the sun’s UV rays and also protect against blue light. This will help prevent damage to the eyelids, the surface of the eye, the lens and the retina. Don’t forge that UV radiation can penetrate clouds, so even on cloudy days, it’s essential to wear sunglasses.
By taking are of your eyes and adopting simple sun protection measures, you can considerably reduce the risk of long-term damage. Investing in a good quality pair of sunglasses means investing in your eye health and vision for years to come.
