Tint and Lens Protection

Tinted lenses come in a variety of colours and shades. With options ranging from pale-brown to green and even grey, there’s a broad range of tints to choose from; but be careful, not all tints are created equal. Contrary to popular belief, tint and protection don’t go hand in hand. A darker tint does not necessarily mean better protection. It is important to check the UV index. The UV index is a measurement used to gauge the strength of the sun’s ultraviolet radiation and the risk of adverse health effects, especially to your eyes.

Manufacturers follow voluntary industry standards when labelling these products. Sunglasses that follow these standards usually fall within the following categories:

1. Fashion sunglasses usually have lightly tinted lenses and are recommended for use in sunlight that is not too harsh. They filter up to 60% of visible light and UVA rays as well as from 87.5% to 95% of UVB rays;
2. General purpose sunglasses block from 60-92% of visible light and UVA rays and up to 99% of UVB rays. They are recommended for days where the sun is strong enough to make you squint. They are the only ones strong enough for driving;
3. Special purpose sunglasses block up to 97% of visible light, up to 98.5% of UVA rays and at least 99% of UVB rays. They are suitable for prolonged sun exposure.

Types of Lenses

There are different types of lenses according to various needs:

• Regular lenses reduce the brightness of all light in a uniform manner;

• Photochromic lenses react to the intensity of UV light by turning darker when outdoors and lighter when indoors. They allow you to adapt to all situations without ever noticing or having to change glasses!
• Mirror lenses partially or completely reflect light as opposed to absorbing it.
